Concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production are on the rise, as highlighted in a report by Reuters. A survey of nearly 100,000 people across 47 countries indicates increasing skepticism toward AI-generated news and significant challenges for the journalism industry.
The survey reveals that 52% of respondents in the U.S. and 63% in the U.K. express discomfort with news primarily produced by AI. Each country surveyed included 2,000 participants, who showed a preference for AI to support journalists rather than replace them, enhancing their efficiency. Notably, anxiety about online misinformation has climbed three percentage points from last year, with 59% of respondents voicing concerns this year.
Nick Newman, a senior research associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and principal author of the "Digital News Report," noted, “It is surprising to see such a high level of skepticism; people are increasingly worried about the reliability and trustworthiness of content.”
These findings underscore the growing need for transparency and reliability in news sources as AI continues to influence journalism.
