Roblox continues to thrive with over 70 million daily active users since its launch in September 2006—nearly 18 years ago. To enhance its expansive community, the development team is implementing real-time AI chat translation, facilitating connections among gamers worldwide.
CTO Daniel Sturman explained that the team created a "unified, transformer-based translation large language model (LLM)" to effectively manage conversations in all 16 languages supported on Roblox. This model recognizes Roblox-specific slang and abbreviations—like "obby," which represents an obstacle course in the game. As a result, users will see messages displayed in their native language with a minimal delay of only 100 milliseconds, ensuring a near real-time experience. Users can easily access the original language of each message by clicking the translation icon next to it.
Sturman also noted that their language model's advanced architecture and iterative training allow it to "outperform commercial translation APIs on Roblox content." The development team plans to introduce a feedback tool to enhance translation quality further, along with continuous updates for new catchphrases that emerge on the platform.
In addition to chat translations, Sturman revealed that the team is exploring automatic translations for "text on images, textures, 3D models," and more. With Roblox's voice chat feature, there are also plans for automatic voice chat translations, enabling gamers around the globe to communicate seamlessly in their preferred languages.
