Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, recently highlighted the significant influence a decade-old conversation with Steve Jobs had on the company's AI initiative, Agentforce. He shared this story during a press briefing just prior to the launch of Salesforce's most ambitious project to date.
Agentforce, a suite of AI-driven autonomous agents, represents a transformative leap for Salesforce, enhancing how businesses engage with AI. Unlike traditional chatbots, this platform facilitates intelligent systems capable of complex reasoning and decision-making.
Benioff reflected on his meeting with Jobs, emphasizing Jobs' meticulous focus on product development, which has inspired the strategy behind Agentforce. In his own words:
“In 2010, Steve Jobs called me and said, ‘Mark, I need you down in my office today.’ I arrived with a few executives, grateful for the support he had given Salesforce.
During our discussion, he revealed, ‘Since 2007, I’ve been focused on the iPhone.’ I acknowledged receiving one from him and expressed my appreciation. Then he shared about the new iPad, showing me two sizes but insisting on only one, the 10-inch model.
Curious, I asked why, and he replied, ‘All the products have to fit on my coffee table.’ He then stressed, ‘At Apple, I only concentrate on one thing at a time. For three years, it was the iPhone, and now it’s the iPad.’
Steve explained the importance of having an A-team, saying, ‘I want to run that A-team.’ His insights were truly inspiring. As we developed Agentforce, I encouraged my teams to adopt that same focus: ‘This is our sole priority at Salesforce. We are fully committed to Agentforce.’ It is the most exciting technology we have ever created.
Users are already reporting remarkable experiences with the platform, which we are positioning at the heart of our vision, especially as we gear up for Dreamforce.
Salesforce has experienced considerable growth, with 75,000 employees and $38 billion in revenue this year. We’re just getting started.
However, I recognize that some executives, particularly those unfamiliar with technology, may not fully appreciate the magnitude of our advancements. I’ve taken the time to convey that what we are achieving is unprecedented in my experience.
The integration of AI into our platform is nothing short of artistry. As MK [Muralidhar Krishnaprasad] advised me, ‘Mark, you should rename the company Agentforce. You don’t yet grasp the full impact of what’s happening.’
This is an exhilarating moment. Our management team shares this excitement as we plan our rollout, aiming for a billion-agent goal. Unlike basic add-ons, we’re creating a seamless experience for our customers, empowering ordinary users to harness AI capabilities.
At Salesforce, we aspire for everyone to be a technology trailblazer, and with this new initiative, our customers will have that opportunity. We have successfully placed AI at the core of our mission.
Benioff’s insights highlight the interconnectedness of innovation within Silicon Valley. As Salesforce aggressively shifts towards AI with Agentforce, it’s evident that Jobs’ legacy continues to influence strategies throughout the tech industry. This initiative positions Salesforce as a leader in the enterprise AI revolution, potentially urging competitors to expedite their own innovations.
As the company endeavors to deploy a billion AI agents, stakeholders will closely observe how this strategic pivot affects Salesforce’s financial performance and market standing. The true measure of Agentforce lies in delivering tangible value to customers while preserving the human-centric approach that has distinguished Salesforce. In the competitive realm of enterprise AI, Benioff believes that sometimes, progress requires looking back.
