Contrary to recent rumors, OpenAI will not unveil an AI-powered search engine at its forthcoming event on Monday, as confirmed by CEO and co-founder Sam Altman on X. OpenAI president Greg Brockman echoed this announcement on the same platform.

However, OpenAI has announced a live stream on Monday, May 13th, starting at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET, where they will showcase updates for ChatGPT and GPT-4. A banner titled “Spring Updates” is displayed on the OpenAI website, allowing users to download a .ics calendar file to add the event to their digital calendars, including Outlook, Google Calendar, and Apple Calendar.

Speculation is rife regarding what OpenAI will announce instead of a search engine. Many anticipate a focus on “agentic AI,” a term gaining traction in the industry. This concept refers to AI agents built on foundational models that can autonomously plan and execute tasks for users. One notable example is Cognition’s Devin, an advanced AI agent leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo model.

OpenAI last updated its high-performance GPT-4 Turbo model and API in early April, reclaiming its position as the leading AI model globally, surpassing competitors like Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus, which was revealed the previous month. Additionally, Altman has hinted at the mysterious “gpt2-chatbot” that has appeared intermittently online, suggesting it may be a new iteration of ChatGPT or a similar chatbot from OpenAI.
