Samsung Launches Gauss: A Versatile ChatGPT Alternative for Generating Text, Code, and Images

Just days after OpenAI's developer event, Samsung introduced its own generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, at the Samsung AI Forum 2023. Developed by Samsung Research, this innovative AI platform includes three tools: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image.

Samsung Gauss Language is a large language model capable of understanding and responding to human language, similar to ChatGPT. It aims to enhance productivity by assisting users in writing and editing emails, summarizing documents, and translating languages. Samsung intends to integrate this advanced language model into its smartphones, laptops, and tablets, making its smart devices more intelligent. While a Samsung spokesperson did not confirm support for both English and Korean interaction, the anticipation remains high.

Samsung Gauss Code is specifically designed to assist developers by streamlining the code-writing process. Paired with its code assistant, code.i, this tool aims to facilitate coding through interactive interfaces, helping with code descriptions and generating test cases quickly.

As for Samsung Gauss Image, this tool will focus on image generation and editing—capable of transforming low-resolution images into high-resolution masterpieces, for example.

Currently, Samsung Gauss is being trialed internally, with plans for public access “in the near future.” However, the company has yet to provide a specific timeline. Reports suggest that Samsung aims to launch the Galaxy S24, which will leverage its generative AI model, as early as 2024.

Furthermore, Samsung has established an AI Red Team tasked with monitoring security and privacy concerns throughout data collection and AI development. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to ethical AI use.

At the AI forum, Daehyun Kim, executive vice president of Samsung Research Global AI Center, stated, “We will continue to support and collaborate with the industry and academia on generative AI research.”

The name Samsung Gauss pays homage to mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, whose principles underpin much of AI and machine learning.

Samsung's generative AI announcement follows a seven-month suspension on the use of generative AI tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, on company devices due to an internal data leak earlier this year.
