Sandbox AQ, an Alphabet Quantum Spin-Out, Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of Good Chemistry

Sandbox AQ, a cutting-edge AI and quantum technology firm established as a spinoff from Google's parent company Alphabet in 2022, has acquired Good Chemistry, a Vancouver-based startup specializing in quantum and computational chemistry. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

Founded in 2021 by Arman Zaribafiyan as an offshoot of quantum computing firm 1QBit, Good Chemistry has garnered support from investors like Green Sands Equity and Accenture Ventures. The company provides cloud-based solutions that expedite material design, enabling chemistry professionals to develop simulation applications and workflows utilizing quantum chemistry algorithms, machine learning, and quantum computing.

In a recent press release, Nadia Carlsten, VP of Sandbox AQ, highlighted that this acquisition will enhance the company’s global footprint while incorporating “proven technologies” and valuable clients, including Dow Chemical, into its offerings. Notably, all of Good Chemistry's investors will also become part of Sandbox AQ's investor network, as Carlsten noted.

“Good Chemistry’s software and established partnerships will allow us to accelerate the delivery of advanced simulation and AI tools to a broader range of customers,” said Carlsten. “By merging our strengths, Sandbox AQ will create a sophisticated, scalable computing environment for precise chemical simulation, facilitating impactful applications in new drug discovery and material synthesis.”

Sandbox AQ recognizes the critical role simulation plays in its mission, which spans drug discovery and material innovation across various sectors such as agriculture, defense, energy, medical, and manufacturing. The acquisition brings on board 25 experts, including computational and quantum chemists, AI engineers, and quantum scientists who excel in simulation technology. Notably, Zaribafiyan will take on the role of head of product for simulation platforms at Sandbox, with the remaining Good Chemistry team members joining Sandbox’s existing simulation units.

“The rapid evolution of AI, quantum computing, cloud technology, and high-performance computing has opened limitless opportunities for companies like Good Chemistry and Sandbox AQ to revolutionize chemistry, improve product safety, strength, and sustainability, and ultimately transform our world,” remarked Zaribafiyan. “Leveraging Sandbox AQ's extensive reach and domain expertise will enhance our platform's capabilities significantly.”

As part of this acquisition, Sandbox AQ plans to integrate Good Chemistry’s software solutions, Qemist Cloud and Tangelo, into its enterprise software suite. Qemist empowers users to harness quantum chemistry simulations, while Tangelo facilitates conducting chemistry experiments across various quantum cloud providers and hardware systems.

This marks Sandbox AQ’s second acquisition, following its purchase of Cryptosense, a cybersecurity and encryption startup focused on enterprise software-as-a-service, in 2022.
