"Slack Survey Reveals 5 Distinct Worker Personas and Their Unique Approaches to AI"

A new survey from Slack and Salesforce reveals that organizations aiming to enhance AI adoption should personalize their strategies for engaging employees.

The latest Slack Workforce Index surveyed 5,000 full-time desk workers about their AI usage, identifying five distinct personas regarding their interaction with AI in the workplace.

The Personas:

- Maximalist: Uses AI multiple times a week and actively discusses it with colleagues.

- Underground: Frequently utilizes AI but is reluctant to share this with others.

- Rebel: Skeptical of AI, viewing its use as unfair.

- Superfan: Enthusiastic about AI but has not yet integrated it into their work.

- Observer: Cautiously interested, waiting to begin using AI.

Christina Janzer, Senior Vice President of Research and Analytics at Slack, emphasized the importance of recognizing these personas to drive AI adoption effectively. "These personas reflect the diverse ways employees engage with AI, as well as their varied emotions and experiences," she stated. Janzer highlighted that understanding emotional responses is vital for predicting adoption behaviors, indicating that a tailored approach is essential—there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

The survey results showed that 30% of respondents identify as Maximalists, 20% as Undergrounds, and 19% as Rebels. Notably, Janzer pointed out that many Rebels are women over the age of 45.

Despite widespread discussions about AI in the workplace, true adoption levels remain unclear.Microsoft's fourth annual Work Trend Index noted that 75% of employees use AI at work, yet many report receiving limited guidance from their employers. Conversely, a February Slack Workforce Index indicated that 81% of workers feel more productive with AI. However, a separate EY survey revealed that 71% of employees have concerns about AI, with nearly half becoming increasingly wary with more exposure.

Given these mixed findings, Slack's approach to customizing communication about AI appears to be a promising strategy. Janzer suggested that organizations capitalize on the enthusiasm of Maximalists while encouraging Undergrounds to openly share their positive experiences. "Create spaces for Maximalists to exchange ideas and share their AI usage," she advised. For Undergrounds, she recommended providing clear guidelines and encouraging openness about their AI experiences.

To address Rebels, Janzer emphasized the need for training and resources that clarify AI’s role in enhancing productivity rather than undermining fairness. Equipping Superfans and Observers with valuable training sessions could also motivate them to explore AI applications in their work more confidently.

Additionally, Slack has introduced a quiz to help individuals identify their AI personas, fostering insights into their approach to AI in the workplace.

By understanding and addressing these diverse perspectives, organizations can improve AI adoption and maximize its potential benefits.
