AI is already transforming the landscape of voice agent jobs, and companies are actively seeking to replace traditional computer-generated voice models with synthetic human voices. Truecaller, the popular caller ID service, is the latest to embrace this innovation, announcing the launch of its AI-powered Assistant that can respond to phone calls in users' own voices.
This exciting new feature arises from a partnership with Microsoft, leveraging the tech giant’s Personal Voice technology, which was introduced in November as part of Azure AI Speech.
By integrating Microsoft’s Personal Voice, Truecaller’s Assistant—available to premium subscribers—will now replicate users’ voices to greet and respond to callers. This enhancement complements existing system-generated voice options, allowing the digital assistant to screen unknown calls, leave messages, respond on behalf of the user, or even record calls.
To activate this feature, Truecaller users simply need to record a short script in their own voice, provided they give their consent. This process enables the Assistant to engage callers using a digital version of the user's voice.
Truecaller’s Assistant typically offers users the ability to edit the introductory greeting template. However, the company has clarified that when using a personal voice, the customization of the greeting template is limited to ensure callers understand they are receiving a “digital” greeting from the user.
While the introductory greeting is standardized, follow-up responses are fully customizable according to user preferences. Additionally, Azure AI Speech’s personal voice functionality incorporates watermarks in the generated audio to help identify synthetic speech.
“We are confident that the personal voice feature will revolutionize how our users manage calls and enhance their overall experience with Truecaller Assistant. We are eager to further explore the potential of AI-driven voice technologies in partnership with Microsoft and deliver innovative solutions to our global community,” stated Raphael Mimoun, product director and general manager at Truecaller Israel.
The rollout of the personal voice feature for Truecaller’s Assistant is set to commence in the coming weeks, starting in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Chile. Initially, it will be accessible to beta users, with plans for a wider release to all eligible users shortly thereafter.
