AI Video Generation: Krea AI's New Frontier
In the rapidly evolving field of AI video generation, Open's unreleased Sora model has garnered considerable attention, overshadowing competitors like Runway and Pika. However, a new contender has emerged: Krea AI. This lesser-known San Francisco-based generative AI media startup, co-founded by Victor Pérez and Diego Rodriguez, launched its public beta in late 2023.
AI Agents Ready to Take Off
Krea initially provided AI image upscaling services, enhancing user-submitted images for improved resolution and detail. Shortly after, it introduced real-time AI image generation, featuring a user-friendly interface with cursor-based brushes and simple shapes for guiding creations, in addition to standard text prompts.
Earlier today, Krea unveiled an exciting update for its subscription tiers that allow video generation. The announcement on the company’s X account included a helpful thread of examples to illustrate the feature.
Subscribing to Krea’s highest tier, “Max,” at $60 per month (monthly billing), users can now access the “Video” section on the Krea AI website to initiate their video projects. The company also offers lower tiers, including Basic ($10/month) and Pro ($35/month).
How Krea Video Works
Unlike Pika and Runway— which primarily focus on adding motion to still images, converting text prompts into videos, or transforming existing footage—Krea enables users to blend “key frame” still images with text prompts in a single project. Users can delete, reorder, or adjust the duration of different frames, providing a versatile editing experience.
The interface resembles familiar video editing software like Apple’s iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, and CapCut.
Krea’s video generation process unfolds in two distinct phases. Initially, a low-resolution preview is created for users to review, followed by an enhancement phase that produces a high-resolution final product. Users have the flexibility to cancel the generation process at any point for added control.
Users are already showcasing their remarkable creations with Krea Video. While it may not achieve the photorealism of its competitors, Krea generates videos characterized by smooth transitions and captivating animated visuals.
A Rapid Ascent in the AI Landscape
Co-founders Pérez, a former head of machine learning research at Plyzer Intelligence, and Rodriguez, dubbed a “Renaissance man,” are both Cornell University alumni. Pérez serves as CEO while Rodriguez holds the CTO role.
Krea AI’s swift rise within the dynamic AI art scene is attributed to its innovative real-time generation capabilities. These features have differentiated Krea AI from competitors and attracted nearly a million users from the film and gaming sectors.
In March, Krea was recognized as one of Fast Company magazine's “Most Innovative Companies in 2024” for its groundbreaking contributions to AI-powered media creation. The startup is now focused on commercializing its latest advancements in AI technology.
