About a year ago, Google introduced Duplex, an AI-driven tool that can make calls and book appointments on your behalf. As a follow-up to this innovation, Google recently announced CallJoy—a virtual customer service agent designed to manage inbound calls for small businesses.
When a customer calls, CallJoy greets them with a personalized message and provides essential business information, such as operating hours. If the caller needs assistance with online tasks, like placing an order or scheduling an appointment, CallJoy can text them the relevant URL upon request. For customers who prefer to speak with a representative or are calling from a landline, their call will be routed directly to the business phone. Additionally, CallJoy effectively filters out spam calls.
CallJoy records and transcribes all interactions, allowing small business owners to categorize calls by topic and search through transcripts via a user-friendly dashboard. It also offers valuable insights, including metrics on call volume and the ratio of returning vs. new callers.
However, users will need to select a virtual number with an area code, as Google does not transfer existing phone numbers to the CallJoy service. The system is limited to one location and one phone number per account, although business owners can add additional lines for a fee of $39 per month.
CallJoy has the potential to significantly reduce call waiting times, enabling customers to obtain information more quickly and allowing business owners to focus on filling orders and assisting in-person customers. With an estimated 400 million calls made to small businesses each day, this system could save entrepreneurs considerable time.
While CallJoy is still in its early stages, future enhancements may include capabilities like managing food orders for restaurants without online systems, handling reservations, or connecting with inventory systems to check stock availability or make reservations. The future may very well see Google's services communicating effortlessly to fulfill our requests.
