Utilizing Telstra’s High-Speed Fiber, Microsoft Enhances AI Workloads

Microsoft has expanded its infrastructure in Australia by partnering with Telstra to meet customer demand. Leveraging Telstra’s new ultra-fast Intercity Fiber Network, Microsoft will enhance capacity and speeds for customers using its AI services. The network spans 8,700 miles of ultra-low-latency fiber cabling connecting major Australian cities, regions, and remote areas, which will enable Microsoft to provide super fast connection speeds for AI services users.

Microsoft has become a foundational partner in the network, gaining access to the first routes. The strategic partnership, established in 2022, is among Microsoft's largest in the telco industry globally. By extending AI infrastructure, Microsoft aims to support customers and partners in unlocking new opportunities and realizing business value with AI. Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s chief commercial officer, expressed enthusiasm about enabling AI transformation across Australia to enhance employee experiences, customer engagement, business processes, and innovation.

To meet the rising demand for AI services, Microsoft is enhancing its network capacities by utilizing Lumen’s network technologies. The company is also expanding data centers, constructing new sites in France, and strengthening cloud and AI infrastructures in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan. Telstra has purchased 21,000 licenses for Microsoft’s AI-powered productivity assistant, Copilot for Microsoft 365, to help employees adapt and thrive in an AI-driven future.

The Copilot for Microsoft 365 offers productivity tools to enhance user experience on platforms like Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Telstra conducted a trial with 300 staff members who used the AI assistant to summarize meetings and emails, resulting in significant time savings. The internal survey revealed that employees saved one to two hours per week with Copilot, with 90% reporting an improved work experience. Vicki Brady, Telstra’s CEO, highlighted the importance of equipping employees with cutting-edge AI technology and fostering a culture of continuous learning, improvement, and innovation in driving digital and AI transformation within the organization.
