Video Game Voice Actors Go on Strike Due to Artificial Intelligence Concerns

Voice actors in the video game industry have initiated a strike due to unsuccessful negotiations with major game studios regarding fair compensation and AI protections. The union representing actors, SAG-AFTRA, engaged in talks with companies like Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts (EA), and Disney Character Voices for over 18 months. The actors have now voted 98.32% in favor of the strike after failing to secure adequate protection for members in relation to artificial intelligence.

At the core of the dispute is the demand for clear AI safeguards for performers, which the studios have been hesitant to guarantee. SAG-AFTRA emphasizes the necessity of protecting members from potential misuse of AI technology within contracts. "We're not willing to accept terms that allow companies to exploit AI at the expense of our members," stated Fran Drescher, the union's president.

While the previous contract expired in November 2022, the striking actors seek comparable protections to those secured by their counterparts in film, television, and animation industries. With the growing interest in AI to streamline game development costs, actors are concerned about the potential impact on their earnings and artistic rights.

As a result of the strike, major gaming franchises like "Grand Theft Auto VI" and "Mass Effect" may face delays or alterations in their production. SAG-AFTRA demands fair compensation and informed consent for the use of actors' voices and likenesses in AI applications, mirroring standards in other entertainment sectors.

Prominent video game performers, such as those from "Baldur's Gate 3," have expressed dissatisfaction with unauthorized AI cloning of their voices for inappropriate purposes. Noteworthy figures like Jennifer Hale have pledged to cease involvement in games until the strike is resolved, emphasizing the importance of equitable treatment.

In addition to AI concerns, disparities in pay compared to inflation rates have further fueled the actors' frustration. SAG-AFTRA encourages solidarity from video game streamers on platforms like Twitch.tv to raise awareness and garner support for the strike. Amidst these challenges, the voice actors in the video game industry stand united in their quest for fair compensation and protection against AI misuse.
