Volkswagen Integrates ChatGPT Voice Recognition in Select Models

At CES 2024, Volkswagen revealed plans to incorporate ChatGPT into the voice recognition systems of select upcoming vehicles, promising enhanced functionality beyond traditional voice command systems. Set to launch in the second quarter of 2024, ChatGPT is "under consideration for the U.S. market," according to a VW press release.

Using Cerence Chat Pro, Volkswagen's integration of ChatGPT will enable drivers to engage with the chatbot without needing to activate it separately, establish an additional account linked to their car's user profile, or download a distinct app. Voice recognition will continue to perform as in existing VW models—managing climate, infotainment, and navigation—but now it will also be capable of responding to general knowledge inquiries with answers powered by ChatGPT. Importantly, this integration will not allow ChatGPT access to vehicle data, and interactions will be "deleted immediately," as stated by VW.

Volkswagen plans to implement ChatGPT across several models, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 electric vehicles, along with updated versions of the Golf, Passat, and Tiguan. The ID.4 is currently available in the U.S., while the ID.7 is anticipated to hit U.S. dealerships later this year (the other two ID models were not designed for the U.S. market). Although the Passat has been discontinued in the U.S., the new Tiguan is expected to debut this year. VW also offers the GTI and Golf R performance variants, which will likely feature ChatGPT technology in the U.S.

While Volkswagen claims to be the first "volume manufacturer" to include ChatGPT as a standard feature, it is not alone in adopting this technology. Mercedes-Benz announced in June that it would integrate ChatGPT for voice control in its vehicles. However, as a luxury brand, VW emphasizes its commitment to democratizing technology, making it accessible to a broader audience. "Volkswagen has always democratized technology and made it accessible to the many," stated Kai Grünitz, VW board member for technical development. "This also highlights the innovative strength of our new products.”
