Since the launch of xAI last year, Elon Musk has been utilizing X as a testing ground to showcase the capabilities of the Grok AI model. Beyond functioning as a basic chatbot, X leverages this model to summarize breaking news and trending events. Recently, the platform introduced a new feature titled “More About This Account,” designed to provide concise, AI-generated insights about a user. While it seems promising, the outcomes often fall short of expectations.
Paid users can discover the “More About This Account” button by hovering over a handle or display name on the web platform. By clicking this button, they can access an AI-generated synopsis. However, Grok frequently delivers overly generic information or, in some instances, gets details completely wrong.
For example, when I inquired about my colleagues Sean O’Kane and Amanda Silberling, Grok merely provided vague statements regarding the types of posts they share. Alarmingly, it misattributed expertise to my associate Jagmeet Singh, labeling him as a Canada expert despite his limited posts on that subject.
In another instance, it inaccurately categorized Ram Iyer, a editor, as a brunch enthusiast. When I looked up Hardik Pandya, the Senior VP of Design and Product at the edtech startup Unacademy, Grok mistakenly provided information about the well-known Indian cricketer instead.
In X's defense, the platform includes a disclaimer regarding potential inaccuracies in Grok's outputs. “Grok version 1.5 is an early feature and can make mistakes. Verify its outputs,” the warning message states.
Even when Grok provides accurate information, it often lacks the depth that users could easily glean by simply reviewing the account and bio themselves. Considering Grok has access to X’s extensive data, the feature should deliver more meaningful insights. It clearly requires further development to reach its full potential.
