Android 15 Launches — Why Your Phone Isn't Ready for It Yet

Android 15 has officially launched for developers, with broader support for Pixel phones expected in the coming weeks. Users with compatible devices from brands like Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and Nothing can anticipate updates in the next few months.

Unlike Apple's major yearly updates tied directly to iOS versions, Google's Android updates generally enhance how apps and devices interact. Android 15 will introduce features such as single-tap passkeys, theft detection, improved multitasking for large-screen devices, and tighter app access restrictions.

One notable improvement is the updated TalkBack screen reader, which will integrate with Google’s Gemini AI assistant to offer audio descriptions of images on your phone. Additionally, Circle to Search is gaining a Shazam-like capability that lets you identify songs playing around you. Users can tap a music button to find the song's name, artist, and related YouTube video.

Google is also enhancing earthquake alerts across the U.S. and its territories. Previously available in California, Oregon, and Washington through the ShakeAlert system, the service will now use data from Android device accelerometers to send alerts in areas lacking access to traditional systems. When multiple devices in a location detect vibrations, Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts will analyze the data to determine if an earthquake is underway.

Other upcoming features include a function for Chrome to read webpages aloud and offline Google Maps support in Wear OS 5, further enhancing user accessibility and convenience.
