Apple and OpenAI's Investment Talks: ChatGPT Set to Integrate with iOS 18

OpenAI Secures New Round of Funding: Apple May Invest Over $100 Billion

On August 30, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI is in the process of raising a new round of funding, with its valuation expected to exceed $100 billion. Apple is in talks with Microsoft, Nvidia, and other companies regarding potential investments, a move that will further strengthen Apple’s partnership with OpenAI and is critical for its advancements in artificial intelligence.

While the exact investment amount has not been disclosed, Apple is expected to take a significant share in this funding round. Since 2019, Microsoft has invested $13 billion in OpenAI, making it the primary strategic investor and holding 49% of the profit share. OpenAI aims to raise several billion dollars through this financing, with Thrive Capital leading the effort and planning to contribute $1 billion.

In addition, Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18, expected to launch later this year. This collaboration will enable ChatGPT to work with Siri, offering users a more intelligent voice assistant experience. According to Bloomberg, ChatGPT will be able to answer questions directly within Siri and will be part of Apple’s system-wide Writing Tools feature, supporting users in generating text and images.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will have free access to ChatGPT without needing to create an account. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus can link their accounts to these devices for premium features. Apple has confirmed that OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and users’ IP addresses will be kept private.

Currently, Apple’s smart features are available for developers in the iOS 18.1 beta, although the ChatGPT integration has not yet been launched. The Apple Intelligence feature requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a Mac or iPad with an M1 chip or newer, with the device language set to U.S. English. Support for additional languages will be expanded in the coming year.

Microsoft plans to further invest in OpenAI as well, indicating that the surge in AI investments is far from over.
