Humane AI Unveils the AI Pin: A Revolutionary Wearable Assistant
Wearable startup Humane AI has been sharing intriguing details about its innovative AI Pin device for months. First showcased at a TED Talk and later at Paris Fashion Week, the AI Pin is set for its official unveiling soon. However, many questions remain about its functionality.
Here’s what we know so far: Founded by former Apple employees, Humane AI promises a product that transforms the wearable experience. The AI Pin is a pocket-sized device designed to replace many functions of modern smartphones and digital assistants, but it does so without a traditional screen. Instead, it operates mainly through voice commands and can project a virtual screen onto your palm.
Priced at $700, the AI Pin also requires a $24 monthly subscription for its own mobile virtual network service, which features unlimited talk, text, and data under T-Mobile’s network. This subscription includes a dedicated phone number for the AI Pin, ensuring seamless connectivity without the need to tether it to your existing smartphone.
When shipping begins in early 2024, the AI Pin will be available in three colors: Eclipse, Equinox, and Lunar. Its unique magnetic clip functions as both a secure attachment and battery storage, featuring backup batteries for convenience. The device is equipped with an ultra-wide RGB camera and advanced depth and motion sensors, designed to "see the world as you do," according to the company.
The AI Pin runs on a Snapdragon processor enhanced by a Qualcomm AI Engine and operates on a custom Cosmos OS. Its innovative AI software framework, Ai Bus, eliminates the need to download content directly to the device. Instead, the AI Pin quickly identifies your needs, connecting you to relevant AI services seamlessly. Collaborations with Microsoft and OpenAI enhance its capabilities by providing access to powerful AI models and platforms.
Despite the exciting features, several aspects of the AI Pin remain unclear, including battery life and the effectiveness of its anti-tamper system, which secures the device if it becomes compromised. As live demonstrations have been limited, Humane AI will host a launch event soon, likely showcasing functional iterations of the AI Pin.
