Upcoming Google Extensions Set to Launch
Recent findings from the latest Google beta application teardown reveal exciting news: multiple new extensions are on the horizon, including unannounced features for Home, Phone, and Utilities, alongside confirmed additions like Keep, Tasks, and Calendar. It's still unclear whether these extensions will be released all at once or incrementally.
New Features for Gemini
Gemini boasts impressive capabilities, although some key features rely on connections to other platforms—something that these extensions will facilitate. For instance, the existing Google Flights extension provides real-time flight information, enhancing travel-related inquiries. Additional known extensions include Google Hotels, Maps, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music. Recent beta tests indicate that even more extensions are coming soon.
Preview of New Extensions
In the Google beta (v15.29.34.29), at least six new Gemini extensions have been hinted at, with several features yet to be publicly disclosed. Screenshots have surfaced showcasing the expected functionalities of these extensions.
Google Home Extension
The forthcoming Google Home extension will enable Gemini to "control smart home devices like lights and switches." Currently, Gemini must rely on Google Assistant for smart home commands, which can slow down response times. This new extension aims to streamline these interactions, though specific details are still pending confirmation.
Phone Extension
Another upcoming extension is the Phone feature. This extension will allow Gemini to handle phone call commands directly, eliminating the need to route them through Google Assistant. Simple commands such as “Call [insert name]” will function seamlessly.
Utilities Extension
Screenshots suggest that the Utilities extension will enable Gemini to interact directly with phone settings and applications. Proposed actions include taking photos, launching apps, and adjusting volume, all without manual input. Ideally, this could allow users to lock their phones, switch to dark mode, or restart their devices, although current functionality is still subject to further verification.
Confirmed Extensions
The latest beta also referenced three confirmed extensions: Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks. Their introduction was announced at the Google I/O event in 2024, but it remains unclear whether these will be standalone extensions or integrated into existing Workspace extensions. More details on Google’s plans are expected in the coming months—stay tuned for updates!
