Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled exciting updates for the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses during Meta Connect 2024 on Wednesday. The company continues to champion the potential of smart glasses as a groundbreaking consumer gadget, introducing innovative AI features alongside familiar smartphone functionalities that will soon be available on Ray-Ban Meta.
Key enhancements include real-time AI video processing and live language translation. Additionally, features like QR code scanning, reminders, and partnerships with iHeartRadio and Audible are set to enrich the user experience, bringing beloved smartphone capabilities to Ray-Ban Meta.
One of the standout features is real-time AI video capabilities. Users will soon be able to ask their Ray-Ban Meta glasses questions about their surroundings, with Meta AI providing verbal responses instantly. Currently, the smart glasses can take pictures and describe them, but this upcoming video upgrade promises a more intuitive interaction. These advanced multimodal features are expected to roll out later this year.
During a demonstration, users could inquire about food they were preparing or city scenes before them. The new real-time video function aims to enable Meta's AI to process live action and respond audibly. However, achieving seamless performance in real-world scenarios remains a challenge. While both Google and OpenAI have showcased similar real-time video capabilities, Meta aims to be the first to integrate these features into a consumer product.
Another significant development is the introduction of live language translation for Ray-Ban Meta. English speakers will soon be able to converse with individuals speaking French, Italian, or Spanish, as the smart glasses translate the spoken words into the user’s preferred language. Meta plans to expand this feature with additional languages later this year.
Additionally, Ray-Ban Meta glasses will include reminders, enabling users to request Meta AI to remember items they see while wearing the glasses. For instance, a user might ask the glasses to remember a jacket they liked so they can share it with a friend later.
Meta also announced upcoming integrations with popular platforms like Amazon Music, Audible, and iHeartRadio. This will enhance users' ability to enjoy music via the built-in speakers of the glasses, making the experience more enjoyable.
Furthermore, the smart glasses will gain the ability to scan QR codes and phone numbers easily. Users can simply ask the glasses to scan a code, resulting in an immediate connection to the relevant content on their phone without any additional steps required.
Lastly, users will have access to a variety of Transitions lenses for their Ray-Ban Meta glasses, allowing them to adjust to changing light conditions by responding to ultraviolet (UV) light.
As these updates roll out, Ray-Ban Meta is poised to redefine the smart glasses experience.
