Microsoft's AI-powered Designer app officially launches today for iOS and Android users. This innovative tool allows you to create custom images, stickers, greeting cards, invitations, and more using templates. With the help of AI, Designer can also edit images, restyle them, and compile collages.
Previously available only on the web and through Microsoft Edge, Designer has been in preview for almost a year. It is now accessible to anyone with a personal Microsoft account, offering a free app for Windows, iOS, and Android. The mobile version enables image creation and editing on the go.
Microsoft Designer features a user-friendly text prompt for generating images, along with a wide selection of templates for greeting cards, social media posts, icons, wallpapers, and coloring book pages. The app also includes an avatar creator, particularly highlighted in the mobile interface.
The AI capabilities allow you to edit images by restyling them or adding decorative AI-generated borders. Additional features enable background removal, the elimination of unwanted people or objects, and the addition of text and branding to your images.
While Designer is a standalone app, it is also integrated into Microsoft products like Word and PowerPoint through Copilot. Copilot Pro subscribers can create images and designs directly within these apps, with a new banner image generator for Word documents arriving soon.
Windows Insiders will gain access to Designer within the Photos app on Windows 11, featuring tools to erase objects, remove backgrounds, auto-crop images, and apply filters—all without leaving the app. These capabilities will also come to Microsoft Edge soon.
Upon launch, Microsoft Designer includes 15 free daily boosts for creating and editing AI-powered images and designs. According to Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Office product group, "Boosts are automatically used whenever you’re creating or editing images or designs both in the Designer app and where Designer is integrated across Microsoft apps." Upgrading to a Copilot Pro subscription provides 100 boosts per day.
