In the realm of digital creativity, OpenAI’s Sora technology has helped director Paul Trillo bring to life a music video (MV) dream that he had set aside a decade ago. Trillo recently released his first official MV created entirely with Sora, tailored for independent artist Washed Out (real name Ernest Weatherly Greene Jr.) and his new single, “The Hardest Part.” This marks a significant milestone for AI technology in video production.
The four-minute music video captures pivotal moments in a couple's life, showcasing their journey from youthful high school days to building a marriage and family through rapid zoom shots. Trillo generated up to 700 video clips using Sora, ultimately selecting 55 clips within Adobe Premiere to complete the project, which took six weeks.
Trillo originally conceived this creative vision ten years ago but had to shelve it due to technical and budget limitations. Now, thanks to Sora’s capabilities, he has finally realized his vision. “This time, I had the freedom to experiment with different ideas without excessive creative trimming, which naturally shaped a different narrative,” Trillo explained.
Washed Out’s new song “The Hardest Part” delves into themes of lost love. To effectively convey the longing expressed in the track, Greene decided to collaborate with Trillo and utilize OpenAI Sora for the MV. This innovative partnership makes Greene the first mainstream music artist to produce an MV with a filmmaker using Sora technology.
Sora generates short videos based on text prompts, providing Trillo with limitless creative possibilities. Freed from budgetary and location constraints, he could explore various aspects of characters and narratives. To create effective video clips, Greene crafted detailed prompts that included imagery, camera angles, and character actions.
The successful production of this MV not only showcases the powerful capabilities of Sora technology but also heralds a disruptive trend for AI in video-making. Greene remarked, “I believe we are on the brink of significant advancements in technology, and I look forward to integrating these new tools and exploring how they impact my creativity.”
“The Hardest Part” will serve as the lead single from Greene's upcoming album, “Notes From a Quiet Life,” set to be released on June 28. This MV stands as the longest video created using Sora technology to date. As AI technology continues to evolve and gain traction, it promises to inspire even more innovation and creativity through platforms like Sora.
