Samsung Unveils Exynos 9 Series 9820 Processor: A Leap in On-Device AI
Samsung has introduced its latest system-on-chip (SoC), the Exynos 9 Series 9820, designed specifically for enhancing on-device artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This innovative processor features an AI accelerator, or neural processing unit (NPU), enabling AI tasks to be performed directly on the device—resulting in processing speeds that are up to seven times faster than previous models.
Performance enhancements are significant: the Exynos 9 Series 9820 offers a 20% improvement in single-core performance and a remarkable 40% boost in power efficiency. Additionally, multi-core performance sees a 15% increase. These advancements promise to transform user experiences across devices. For instance, users can expect instant camera adjustments based on environmental conditions and enhanced object recognition for augmented and virtual reality applications.
With boosted broadband speeds of 2.0Gbps, users can download high-definition movies in approximately 15 seconds and enjoy smoother gameplay for massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) with reduced lag.
Samsung's announcement reflects a broader trend in the industry, with competitors like Qualcomm, Apple, and Huawei also focusing on advanced chipsets aimed at sophisticated applications alongside traditional performance goals. The Exynos 9 Series 9820 is expected to enter mass production by the end of this year. While Samsung predominantly uses Snapdragon chips for its US devices, this new processor is likely to be integrated into international versions of upcoming flagship models, such as the Galaxy S10, enhancing the overall AI capabilities and performance of Samsung smartphones.
