Recently, the UK police have begun testing an AI tool called Söze, designed to assist detectives in solving cold cases from decades ago. Developed by the Australian company Akkodis, Söze is currently being trialed by the Avon and Somerset police.
This innovative technology can analyze years of data—including video footage, financial records, and social media content—in just a few hours, significantly reducing the time detectives spend on investigations. In one evaluation, Söze reviewed evidence from 27 complex cases in only 30 hours, a task that would take human investigators decades to complete. Gavin Stephens, Chair of the National Police Chiefs' Council, highlighted the immense potential of AI in cold case investigations, especially given the overwhelming volume of evidence that can make traditional methods nearly impossible.
With strained resources leading to a decline in personnel in cold case units, the introduction of Söze is part of a broader initiative across the UK to harness AI for saving investigation time and resources. Stephens emphasized that AI is not meant to replace human officers but to enhance decision-making, making investigations more efficient and faster. This AI tool brings new hope to unsolved cases, helping to pave the way for justice.
