A narrowly defined notion of AI safety detracts from the serious environmental repercussions of excessive resource consumption for training AI systems. Conversations surrounding the sustainability of this model are largely absent from major discussions, yet they are crucial.

The specter of AGI often distracts from pressing legal and ethical issues tied to using automation tools that rely on personal data—often without individual consent. Issues related to job security, individual rights, and freedoms are at stake. In fact, terms like “copyright” and “privacy” tend to elicit more concern among AI developers compared to hypothetical AGI risks. This reflects a disconnect between genuine threats and the narratives being pushed by those focused on profit.

Commercial interests frequently emphasize the advantages of their innovations while resisting the imposition of necessary “guardrails” that might limit their profitability. Geopolitical tensions and a struggling global economy have led many governments to embrace AI hype, advocating for reduced oversight to enhance their competitive edge in the AI arena.

Thus, the bewildering landscape of AI governance continues to evolve chaotically. In the European Union, for instance, lawmakers have recently approved a risk-based framework for regulating certain AI applications, yet it faces criticism from influential voices who claim it undermines innovation. Notably, this legislation has already been diluted due to lobbying efforts from the technology sector.

The movement to deregulate EU privacy laws is a notable trend. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has emerged as a leading proponent for easing privacy regulations. Their objective? To remove restrictions on how they can utilize personal data for AI training. Following this trend, an open letter advocating against the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) includes signatures from other major corporations, suggesting that Europe’s competitiveness and innovation are at risk due to inconsistent regulatory actions.

Meta's history of GDPR violations renders its advocacy for law reforms particularly ironic. Despite its longstanding track record of infringing on privacy laws, it seeks to redefine the regulatory landscape and eliminate constraints that hamper its operations. This underscores an unsettling tendency to distort reality for financial motives.

The truly concerning aspect of this discourse is the possibility that lawmakers may succumb to these arguments, yielding excessive authority to those who advocate for automation—placing unwarranted trust in unregulated AI systems to deliver economic benefits universally. This strategy fails to recognize the historical trends of recent decades, which have concentrated wealth and power in the hands of a few dominant technology platforms.

As Europe grapples with economic challenges, a recent report from Italian economist Mario Draghi examines the future of European competitiveness while criticizing regulatory barriers perceived as detrimental. Meta's timing is not coincidental; they aim to influence similar conclusions about the necessity for deregulation.
