Earlier this summer, the San Francisco-based AI startup Anthropic— a major competitor to OpenAI in developing advanced large language models (LLMs)—introduced an innovative feature called “Artifacts.”
Artifacts enables users to run code snippets or full programs generated by Anthropic’s Claude family of LLMs and chatbots, all within a new window alongside their chat interface. Users can request Claude to create interactive visualizations, charts, or even playable games, which run seamlessly in their browser. This capability garnered significant attention, with media editor Michael Nuñez dubbing it “this year’s most important AI feature.” Since its launch, users have generated tens of millions of Artifacts, according to Anthropic.
Previously, enabling Claude Artifacts required users to manually activate the feature by clicking their username initials in the lower left corner of the Claude chatbot screen, selecting “Feature Preview,” and toggling on Artifacts. That process has changed: Anthropic recently announced that Artifacts are now generally available across its Free, Pro, and Team plans, as well as on the official Claude mobile apps for iOS and Android. This update simplifies the creation and interaction with interactive code while on the go.
Alex Albert, Anthropic’s Head of Developer Relations, shared on the social network X that he spent “all morning replicating simple games with Claude,” suggesting we are approaching an era of mobile apps being created in real-time by LLMs.
Only users on Free and Pro plans will have the ability to publish and remix Artifacts with the wider Claude community. This collaborative feature encourages content sharing and iteration, fostering an engaging exchange of ideas and resources globally. Meanwhile, users on the Team plan can share Artifacts within Projects, ensuring secure collaboration among team members.
Anthropic aims for Artifacts to streamline workflows and boost productivity by facilitating secure, collaborative use among teams creatively building on each other's work online.
In contrast to the AI industry's heavy emphasis on processing power and model capabilities, Artifacts signals a shift toward enhancing user experience and reimagining AI interfaces beyond traditional chatbots. This strategy mirrors Nintendo's approach in gaming, where the company prioritizes innovative user interfaces over sheer power, often leading to remarkable success.
Anthropic envisions Artifacts as a valuable resource for teams across various industries, enhancing the creation of high-quality deliverables. The platform accommodates a diverse range of outputs, including code snippets, flowcharts, SVG graphics, websites, and interactive dashboards.
For example, developers can generate architecture diagrams directly from codebases, product managers can create interactive prototypes for rapid feature testing, and designers can produce visualizations for quick prototyping. Marketers can design comprehensive campaign dashboards rich in performance metrics, while sales teams can more effectively visualize their pipelines and forecast insights.
As Artifacts become ingrained in the Claude experience, Anthropic anticipates an array of creative and practical applications emerging from its global user base.
