Apple CEO Tim Cook Talks DeepSeek AI, OpenAI Partnership, and AI Challenges Amid Sales Dip

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently discussed DeepSeek’s AI models during an earnings call, highlighting how innovation that drives efficiency is key for the tech giant’s AI strategy. When asked about the potential impact of DeepSeek’s models on Apple’s margins, Cook responded, stating that efficiency is always beneficial, and DeepSeek’s models represent such innovation.

While Cook acknowledged the potential of AI, he also clarified Apple’s hybrid approach: it uses its own AI models for simpler tasks, leveraging its custom silicon chips on devices. For more complex processes, Apple taps into cloud-based AI services, partnering with model providers like OpenAI. Cook emphasized that Apple approaches AI investments in a “prudent and deliberate” manner, ensuring balance and careful consideration.

Apple's AI Partnerships and Future Directions
However, aside from the partnership with OpenAI, Apple has no other AI partnership, meaning that ChatGPT, handles complex questions posed by iPhone users, are processed all via a private cloud. Cook didn’t rule out the possibility of Apple including other AI models, such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude, in future iPhone functions, just hinting that the company is open to future partnerships. Instead, Cook did not indicate whether DeepSeek’s models would be integrated into Apple’s devices.

DeepSeek’s Alleged IP Controversy
OpenAI has recently made claims that its AI models were used to train DeepSeek’s models through a process known as distillation, which, if true, would violate OpenAI’s usage policies. This has raised concerns over intellectual property (IP) theft, casting a shadow over DeepSeek’s accomplishments. Despite these allegations, Tim Cook remained complimentary of DeepSeek’s innovations.

Efficiency Concerns Around DeepSeek
In addition to the IP controversy, analysts have raised doubts about the efficiency of DeepSeek’s AI models. It’s suggested that DeepSeek may have used more GPUs and incurred higher computational costs than initially claimed, challenging the idea that its models are as efficient as they appear. Nevertheless, DeepSeek continues to offer access to its models at a steep discount compared to American labs, maintaining its competitive pricing.

Apple's AI Challenges and Sales Impact
Regarding Apple’s own AI efforts, Cook was questioned about the performance of Apple Intelligence, the company’s in-house AI initiative. Despite a phased rollout of AI features, iPhone sales have not surged as some had expected. In fact, Apple saw a slight decline in sales in the last quarter compared to the previous year. To put a positive spin on the situation, Cook noted that regions where Apple Intelligence had been rolled out showed stronger sales than those where it hadn’t yet launched.

Apple has also faced some setbacks with its AI features. Recently, the company paused its AI-powered news article summaries after the feature generated misleading headlines. In one incident, Apple’s AI mistakenly altered a BBC headline, falsely reporting that Luigi Mangione, charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. This error led to concerns about the accuracy of Apple’s AI-driven content summaries.
