Audi Enhances Voice-Control System by Integrating ChatGPT into Vehicles

Audi is the latest automaker to integrate ChatGPT technology into its vehicles, enhancing the in-cabin voice-control system. This exciting development follows similar efforts by Volkswagen, which has implemented the AI tool across select models. Beginning in July, approximately 2 million Audi owners with vehicles manufactured since 2021—equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB3)—will gain access to this innovative feature.

The MIB3 system made its debut in the Audi A4 and A5 and is now common across many models in the lineup. Future Audi models featuring the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture will also come with ChatGPT capabilities through the upgraded “Audi assistant.” The eagerly anticipated Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first to showcase this advanced integration.

The collaboration with Cerence, a Massachusetts-based software company, allows Audi to offer voice assistance that promises far more engaging interactions. While users can currently manage infotainment, navigation, and climate controls through voice commands, the addition of ChatGPT will enable more complex conversations, including the ability to ask diverse general knowledge questions.

Audi emphasizes that this enhancement not only improves the driving experience but also contributes to safety. “The ability to ask for information using natural language makes driving safer, as the driver never has to take their eyes off the road,” the company stated.

For vehicles equipped with the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture, users can activate the Audi assistant by saying “Hey Audi” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel. If the assistant cannot independently answer a question, it leverages ChatGPT for assistance. Importantly, Audi has taken steps to address security concerns; all queries and responses are immediately deleted, and ChatGPT does not have access to vehicle data.

As technology continues to progress, future updates to the Audi assistant will allow for even richer interactions. Large language models are expected to evolve, enabling the assistant to provide specific vehicle information, such as recommended tire pressures.

Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development at Audi, remarked, “By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications. Our customers will now benefit from straightforward and secure access to AI-based knowledge, marking a significant step toward a best-in-class in-cabin experience for Audi vehicles.”
