"Build AI Chat Applications with Vectara Portal: A Guide for Non-Developers on Engaging with Data"

Vectara Simplifies Generative AI Development with Vectara Portal

Vectara, a pioneer in retrieval augmented generation (RAG), has launched Vectara Portal, an open-source environment designed to empower anyone to build AI applications that interact with their data.

Unlike many commercial solutions that offer instant document insights, Vectara Portal stands out for its user-friendly approach. With just a few simple steps, users—regardless of technical expertise—can create search, summarization, or chat applications utilizing their datasets without needing to write any code.

Unlocking Potential for Non-Developers

This tool has the potential to enable non-developers to enhance a variety of organizational tasks, ranging from policy management to invoice searches. However, it’s worth noting that its performance is still under assessment, as the platform is in beta testing with a limited number of customers.

Ofer Mendelevitch, Vectara’s head of developer relations, shares insights on the anticipated impact of Portal, mentioning that its integration with Vectara’s proprietary RAG-as-a-service platform is expected to drive substantial adoption among non-developers. Mendelevitch expressed excitement about observing the innovative applications users will create, hoping they will highlight the capabilities of Vectara’s enterprise RAG systems.

How Vectara Portal Works

Vectara Portal functions as both a hosted app and an open-source offering under the Apache 2.0 license. Users can create customized portals and share them with targeted audiences.

To get started, users must create a Portal account using their Vectara credentials and set up their profile with a Vectara ID, API Key, and OAuth client ID. Once the profile is established, users can click the “create a portal” button and input basic details, such as the app’s name, description, and functionality—whether it serves as a semantic search tool, summarization app, or conversational assistant.

The user-friendly Portal management screen enables users to access their created portals, adjust settings, and upload documents to tailor the app to their specific data needs. These documents are indexed by Vectara’s RAG platform, ensuring the generation of accurate, hallucination-free responses.

"This platform features a robust retrieval engine and our cutting-edge Boomerang embedding model, resulting in improved response quality," Mendelevitch noted. Thanks to its no-code nature, creators can quickly develop generative AI applications with just a few clicks.

When a portal is set up, the backend constructs a "corpus" pertaining to the uploaded documents within the user's Vectara account. This corpus allows Vectara’s RAG API to efficiently process queries and deliver the most relevant answers.

During the query process, Vectara first identifies the key segments of documents that are pertinent to the user's inquiry (the retrieval step) before forwarding this information to a large language model (LLM). Users can select from multiple LLM options, including Vectara’s own Mockingbird and those from OpenAI.

“For Vectara Scale customers, the Portal integrates the best features of our platform, including the most efficient LLMs,” Mendelevitch added. By default, apps are public and shareable via links, but users can also restrict access to specified individuals.

Aiming to Grow Enterprise Adoption

With its no-code platform, available in both hosted and open-source formats, Vectara aims to enable more enterprise users to create powerful generative AI applications for diverse use cases. The company anticipates that this will increase sign-ups and generate interest in its main RAG-as-a-service offerings, fostering higher conversion rates.

“Makers in enterprises will find RAG a compelling use case, and we want them to experience the full potential of Vectara’s end-to-end platform. Portal is the key to unlocking that understanding and will serve as a valuable asset for product managers, general managers, and C-level executives,” Mendelevitch stated.

Vectara has successfully raised over $50 million in funding and currently serves approximately 50 production customers, including Obeikan Group, Juniper Networks, Sonosim, and Qumulo.
