OpenAI's popular ChatGPT service experienced a significant outage, impacting its 100 million weekly active users. The disruption occurred just before 9 AM ET, with users receiving a message indicating that the platform was “at capacity right now.” OpenAI acknowledged the issue, noting that it affected both the ChatGPT service and its API functionalities. The outage lasted approximately two hours, with restoration completed around 10:50 AM ET.
In an error report, OpenAI explained that they had “identified an issue resulting in high error rates across the API and ChatGPT," and confirmed efforts were underway for remediation. Notably, a partial outage also affected users the previous night, though it did not hinder all users.
Despite this recent setback, OpenAI’s chatbot platform has generally operated smoothly, reaching the impressive milestone of 100 million weekly users with minimal issues. Additionally, the platform boasts over 2 million developers utilizing its API services. OpenAI continues to innovate, recently teasing customizable AI bots and considering the creation of its own hardware to enhance service delivery.
