ChatGPT for Mac: Now Accessible to Everyone!

You can now easily access ChatGPT on your Mac. OpenAI recently announced that its widely-used AI chatbot app is now available to all macOS users. Originally introduced before Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, the companies highlighted their collaboration, which includes seamless integrations of OpenAI’s chatbot across Apple’s platforms including iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

On Mac, users can quickly activate ChatGPT by pressing the Option + Space keyboard shortcut after installing the app. This streamlined access will be instantly recognizable to macOS users, who often rely on Command + Space for Spotlight Search. Instead of traditional search results, users will tap into a vast reservoir of knowledge with just one keystroke. Once open, ChatGPT presents a chat interface that overlays the desktop for easy engagement.

While the launch of the macOS app attracted attention, it coincided with the unveiling of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s advanced generative AI model, designed to handle not just text and speech, but also video. The “o” in its name stands for “omni,” emphasizing its multimodal capabilities.

ChatGPT on desktop caters to both free and paid subscribers, as detailed in the initial announcement. Users can utilize the keyboard shortcut to launch the app, take and share screenshots, upload files, and talk to the chatbot directly, making interaction more efficient. The app features a search function that lets users revisit past conversations.

Initially available to Plus subscribers, OpenAI confirmed through a post on X that the app is now accessible to all Mac users. This collaboration with Apple doesn't stop there; during WWDC, both companies also revealed that iPhone and iPad users will eventually gain access to ChatGPT through Siri and in various AI-driven applications, such as writing tools. Powered by GPT-4o, these features are set to be unveiled later this year along with Apple’s new operating systems.
