Create Vector Graphics in Illustrator with Adobe Firefly's New Generative AI Models

Adobe Illustrator, the leading vector graphics tool for graphic artists, is stepping into the generative AI era with the introduction of the Firefly Vector Model at Adobe's MAX conference. This groundbreaking model is hailed as “the world’s first generative AI system specifically designed for producing vector graphics.” Similar to Firefly's capabilities for image generation, Firefly for Illustrator can create entire vector graphics from scratch. This innovative model was trained using extensive data from Adobe Stock, ensuring rich, high-quality outputs.

In its beta version, Illustrator empowers users to craft complete scenes from a simple text prompt. What sets this feature apart is the ability to generate multiple objects within these scenes, allowing for a cohesive, well-structured graphic. Illustrator intelligently creates distinct elements that can be manipulated individually, just like any other layer or group in the software.

Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP for Generative AI and Sensei, shared that the team utilized tens of millions of vector images from Adobe Stock to refine Firefly’s capabilities. He described this development as “a journey,” emphasizing that the exploration of generative AI for vector imagery required more effort compared to applications focused on other image types. The team prioritized creating a model that generates images with the least number of vector points.

Another exciting addition to Illustrator is the Mockup feature, which allows users to apply vector art to any 3D scene. This can include designs for products like drink cans or mockups of logos on apparel. Costin noted, “Mockup is incredibly valuable for freelancers to present their art in context, helping clients visualize what they are purchasing.”

Additionally, Illustrator introduces Retype, which enables the conversion of static text within images into editable text. This feature also identifies matching fonts, significantly enhancing the editing experience. Plus, Illustrator is now available on the web, broadening accessibility for designers everywhere.
