Adobe Firefly Enhances Image Generation Capabilities for More Realistic Visuals

At MAX, Adobe's annual conference for creatives, the company unveiled significant updates to Firefly, its generative AI image creation service. The latest advancement, known as the Firefly Image 2 Model, enhances the rendering capabilities for human features, including facial characteristics, skin tones, and body parts—elements that have posed challenges for similar AI models.

Since the service launched just six months ago, Firefly users have generated an impressive three billion images, with one billion created in the past month alone. Notably, 90% of these users are new to Adobe’s suite of products. This surge in users likely reflects the popularity of the Firefly web app, prompting Adobe to convert what initially functioned as a demo site into a comprehensive Creative Cloud service.

According to Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of Generative AI and Sensei, the new model is not only built on a broader range of recent images from Adobe Stock and other reliable sources, it’s also considerably larger. “Firefly is composed of multiple models, and we have increased their sizes by a factor of three,” Costin explained. “This expansion allows for deeper connections and the ability to produce more intricate pixels and details.” Additionally, Adobe has nearly doubled the dataset size to enhance the model's capability in understanding user requests.

While the upgraded model demands more resources, Costin assures that it maintains the same processing speed as its predecessor. "We’re focused on distillation, pruning, optimization, and quantization, ensuring that customers enjoy a seamless experience without significantly increasing cloud costs." Currently, Adobe prioritizes quality over tree optimization.

The new model will initially be available through the Firefly web app, with plans to integrate it into Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop, where it enhances popular features like generative fill. Costin emphasized that Adobe views generative AI not merely as a tool for content creation but as a method for generative editing. “Our customers have successfully utilized Photoshop’s generative fill to enhance existing assets—whether from a photo shoot or product shoot—making workflows more efficient.”

Additionally, the updated Firefly web app introduces new features, allowing users to adjust depth of field, motion blur, and field of view settings for their images. Users can also upload an existing image for Firefly to emulate its style, as well as benefit from a new auto-complete feature that optimizes prompt writing to achieve better visuals.

With these enhancements, Adobe solidifies its position in the generative AI landscape, empowering users to elevate their creative processes.
