Discover AI-Powered Visual Search Now Available on iPhone

Visual search technology is making its debut on the iPhone, driven by Apple Intelligence, a comprehensive suite of AI features that Apple unveiled during the 2024 Apple Event on Monday. A new button called Camera Control on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus activates what Apple refers to as "visual intelligence," essentially combining reverse image search with text recognition capabilities.

For instance, if you use visual intelligence to look for a restaurant, it will provide you with essential information such as hours of operation, ratings, and options for viewing the menu or making reservations. Similarly, if you find a flyer promoting an event, you can use this feature to effortlessly add the title, time, date, and location directly to your calendar.

The search results will be powered by Google Search, while Apple assures users that their privacy will be prioritized, stating that images will not be stored. Additionally, thanks to a partnership with OpenAI, the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models will allow users to send queries to ChatGPT. This feature will be particularly useful for tackling challenging homework assignments, among other applications.

Visual intelligence, along with other features from Apple Intelligence, is set to launch in beta this October for users in the U.S. who speak English. Those in other countries can look forward to its rollout in December and early 2025.
