Volkswagen has unveiled its enhanced in-car AI voice assistant, IDA, which incorporates both locally processed and cloud-based responses powered by ChatGPT and other advanced models. This feature will begin rolling out on September 6th, starting with the 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI, as well as the 82kWh battery version of the 2024 ID.4. Additional models will receive the update later this year.
To utilize ChatGPT in compatible vehicles, drivers must subscribe to VW's Plus Speech with AI service. Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to offer the new AI voice assistant across most of its 2025 lineup, which includes free access for three years on the ID.4 and ID Buzz, and one year for the GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan. However, Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Taos owners will need to subscribe individually. Notably, the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models won't feature ChatGPT until 2026.
Volkswagen initially announced its ChatGPT integration plan at CES in January, though details were sparse at the time. The company explained that alongside OpenAI’s chatbot, a variety of other models will be supported by Cerence, an automotive chatbot provider. This partnership will manage more complex requests, such as restaurant recommendations or storytelling, while IDA can handle straightforward commands locally. For instance, if you mention feeling "chilly," it should respond by adjusting the heat accordingly.
