Vector databases: The Backbone of Modern AI
Vector databases have emerged as essential tools in the AI landscape, facilitating the storage and retrieval of unstructured data like images, videos, and text. They play a crucial role in powering large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4, which underpins ChatGPT. This capability for real-time indexing and search is vital for enhancing personalization, recommendation systems, sentiment analysis, and much more.
The skyrocketing demand for generative AI has propelled numerous vector database startups into the spotlight, attracting significant investment along the way. In April alone, Pinecone raised $100 million and Weaviate secured $50 million to elevate their vector database offerings. Additionally, emerging players like Chroma and Qdrant garnered $18 million and $7.5 million, respectively, in seed funding. Zilliz, the key developer behind the Milvus open-source vector database, also closed a $60 million funding round late last year.
This surge in interest highlights the increasing need for robust infrastructure to keep pace with the AI revolution. Australian startup Marqo is seizing this opportunity by introducing a comprehensive “end-to-end” approach to vector search.
Addressing the Challenge of Unstructured Data
Founded in Melbourne in June 2022, Marqo is the brainchild of Jesse Clark, former lead machine learning scientist at Amazon's robotics division, and Tom Hamer, a former database software engineer for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Marqo's mission targets the challenge of unstructured data, estimated to make up 90% of all created data. As more individuals leverage generative AI for queries and content creation, the demand for innovative tools to interpret this data intensifies.
A standout feature of Marqo is its complete vector search solution, which includes vector generation, storage, and retrieval—all accessible through a single API. This eliminates the need for users to rely on third-party vector-generation tools from OpenAI or Hugging Face.
“Vector search can be complex to implement. Vector databases are just one piece of the puzzle, and developers often struggle to integrate all necessary components for an effective vector-based search experience,” said Tom Hamer, Marqo’s co-founder and CEO. “Marqo provides a seamless system that consolidates these components, addressing a significant challenge for developers.”
Moreover, the effectiveness of search systems hinges on the relevance and accuracy of their results. Hamer emphasized that Marqo excels in delivering reliable and timely information storage and retrieval.
“To enhance search relevance, developers typically have to train new AI models for vector generation manually,” he continued. “Marqo's continuous learning technology enables the system to autonomously improve search outcomes based on user interactions, essential for e-commerce and other user-centric applications.”
Investment and Growth Plans
Marqo previously secured £660,000 ($840,000) in pre-seed funding last year, and has now raised an additional $4.4 million in seed financing, aimed at bolstering its commercial initiatives. This includes the launch of a cloud service designed to complement its existing open-source project.
Embracing the Open Source Model
Like its competitors, Marqo's commitment to an open-source approach fosters collaboration with the developer community. Users can modify and adapt the product to suit their needs, increasing the likelihood of recommendations to decision-makers and facilitating contributions to product development.
“I firmly believe that open-source development results in higher-quality outcomes,” Hamer remarked. “Building Marqo on an open-source foundation enabled us to maintain close communication with our users, allowing us to iterate quickly and deliver the solutions developers genuinely require. Open source also serves as an effective customer acquisition method, as potential clients can evaluate the product for free before making a commitment.”
While open source is beneficial, it necessitates substantial resources for successful execution. This is where Marqo Cloud steps in.
“Self-hosting the open-source product is ideal for users with fewer end-users or those building proof of concepts who don’t need real-time search capabilities,” Hamer noted. “Marqo Cloud manages the infrastructure, maintenance, and operational needs for our customers, ensuring optimal performance and cost-effectiveness.”
Though Marqo is an Australian startup, it operates under a parent company based in the U.K., where its first investor, Creator Fund, is located. Marqo also maintains a small office in London and aims to expand its team to include sales, marketing, and customer support, enhancing its presence in Europe.
Marqo's recent seed round was led by Australian VC Blackbird Ventures, with support from Creator Fund, which also participated in the pre-seed round. Additionally, January Capital and Cohere co-founders Ivan Zhang and Aidan Gomez contributed to this latest investment cycle.
