EU AI Act Compliance Deadline: New Guidelines for Developers and Enforcement Rules

The first deadline for the European Union’s AI Act passed a few days ago. The law is designed to regulate AI by banning risky uses, like social scoring that can harm or discriminate against people, or using subliminal techniques to manipulate behavior.

On Tuesday, the EU Commission released new guidance for developers on how to comply with the law. It’s clear: break the rules on these banned uses, and companies could face huge fines — up to 7% of global revenue or €35 million, whichever is greater.

"The guidelines aim for a consistent application of the AI Act across the EU," the Commission said. But they also made it clear that the guidance is not legally binding. It will be up to courts and regulators to enforce the law.

The guidelines are meant to help developers understand the law and avoid trouble. They offer legal explanations and examples to make the rules clearer. "We are committed to fostering a safe and ethical AI environment," the Commission added.

The guidelines are still in draft form. Formal adoption will come once translations are ready for all EU languages.

The AI Act became law last year, but it’s still rolling out. Additional deadlines for compliance are set for the next few years. Enforcement will be gradual, with each country in the EU having until August 2 to appoint the bodies that will oversee the law.
