Gmail is set to enhance its functionality with the introduction of new AI features designed to streamline email management. On the web, Google is launching a Gemini side panel capable of summarizing email threads and drafting new messages. This tool will provide "proactive prompts" and allow users to ask "freeform questions," utilizing Google's powerful models, including Gemini 1.5 Pro.
For mobile app users, Gmail will also incorporate Gemini to summarize email threads, enhancing user experience. However, these upgrades will be accessible only to paid Gemini users, requiring a Google Workspace subscription with either a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscription.
While these tools can offer significant assistance, it’s important not to depend solely on them for critical tasks, as AI systems can sometimes generate inaccuracies. Always double-check important emails drafted with Gemini before sending.
Additionally, Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities to the side panel in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, following its announcement at last month’s I/O event. Other AI features are also on the horizon for Gmail, including “Contextual Smart Reply.”
