Exclusive: Runway Teams Up with Musixmatch to Enable Musicians in Creating AI-Generated Lyric Videos

The rapid adoption of AI video technology in the entertainment industry is on the rise. This week, the buzz surrounding the 1970s horror film Late Night With the Devil emerged, highlighting its use of AI-generated title cards for retro graphics, which has sparked mixed reactions from audiences. Additionally, advancements such as the release of Stable Video 3D, a 3D AI asset creation tool, and a strategic partnership between AI video startup Runway and ad agency Media.Monks were also announced. This collaboration will provide Media.Monks’ team members and clients direct access to Runway's innovative text-and-image-to-video AI software.

However, further announcements from Runway reveal a groundbreaking partnership with Musixmatch, the Italian music tech company known for its on-device live-synced lyrics for major platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Instagram. This collaboration aims to empower over a million musicians within Musixmatch to utilize Runway's Gen-2, its advanced AI video generation model. The Gen-2 model features enhancements like a Multi Motion Brush and region selector, enabling artists to create dynamic video content that complements their music.

According to a press release from Runway, the partnership is designed to allow musicians to generate AI videos synced to their lyrics efficiently. This will streamline the creation of lyric videos—those popular clips that showcase song lyrics in sync with the music and ambient visuals—separating them from traditional music videos, which often include the artist or a storyline.

Runway's Gen-2 incorporates a "Lyrics to Video" feature, which interprets song lyrics to simplify the video generation process. However, access to this feature is exclusive to Musixmatch's Pro subscription tier, starting at $2.99 per month. Musixmatch Pro users will not need a separate Runway account or subscription; the feature will be integrated directly into their Musixmatch experience. Once videos are generated, artists can download or share them across social media platforms.

Some artists, including the Atlanta-based trip-hop group Earthgang, are already utilizing Gen-2 to create lyric videos, demonstrating the immediate potential of this collaboration.

"We are excited to integrate Runway's cutting-edge models directly into the creative process of Musixmatch's vibrant artist community," stated Runway CEO Cristobal Valenzuela. "This partnership will empower artists to elevate their creative vision through video, forging deeper connections with their audiences globally."

Musixmatch's Chief of Product, Marco Paglia, noted, "AI is ushering in a new wave of creativity. With the collaboration between Musixmatch and Runway, musicians now have an innovative partner for video creation, enhancing the way they express their artistry."

While the collaboration between the two companies has generated enthusiasm, a Runway spokesperson clarified that they are not sharing data for AI training as part of this partnership. Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

High-profile musicians are increasingly embracing AI technology to enhance their creative projects. Notable artists like A$AP Rocky, Madonna, and Ye (formerly Kanye West) have successfully integrated AI-generated visuals into their work. Recently, rapper Nicki Minaj engaged in a discussion on X (formerly Twitter) regarding her use of AI-generated images to promote her album Pink Friday 2.

Runway is expanding its reach by creating partnerships with software providers like Canva to integrate its AI video generation tools, making them accessible to a broader audience. While Runway offers a limited number of free video creations, subsequent usage requires a monthly subscription starting at $12. The startup has garnered support from notable investors, including Google.

Despite being recognized as a leader in the AI video space since the launch of Gen-2 in June 2023, Runway faces increasing competition. The recent demo of OpenAI's Sora model, which showcased incredibly lifelike videos, has introduced new challenges. Similarly, competitor Pika has launched features like AI-powered lip sync capabilities and a sound effects generation model, further intensifying the competition.

As the landscape of AI video generation continues to evolve, Runway's strategic partnerships will be crucial in maintaining its competitive edge. The industry remains watchful of developments that may shape the future of video content creation.
