Facebook Supports Creation of Independent AI Ethics Research Center

Facebook is committed to promoting ethical AI, similar to others in the industry. In collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the company is establishing an independent research center dedicated to AI ethics, aptly named the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence. This institute will leverage TUM's academic resources to tackle complex issues in fairness, privacy, safety, and transparency—areas that industry alone cannot adequately address.

Facebook plans to provide an initial $7.5 million grant over five years and may also share its own research findings and tools. Dr. Christoph Lütge from TUM will lead the institute, supported by an advisory board comprising experts from academia, business, and civil society. This research center will have the autonomy to publish its findings and engage with external experts and institutions.

This initiative comes as Facebook navigates its own challenges related to AI ethics, facing accusations of political bias and discrimination stemming from its algorithms. By investing in independent ethics research, Facebook aims to ensure fairness in its AI systems and prevent unforeseen issues.
