Google CEO Sundar Pichai Unveils $120M Fund to Advance Global AI Education Initiatives

During his address at the UN Summit of the Future on Saturday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai characterized artificial intelligence (AI) as "the most transformative technology yet" and introduced a new global fund aimed at AI education and training.

Pichai highlighted four significant ways AI can contribute to sustainable development: enhancing access to information in various languages, accelerating scientific discoveries, providing alerts and tracking for climate-related disasters, and driving economic growth.

While acknowledging the potential risks of AI technologies—such as the threat posed by deepfakes—he did not discuss AI's environmental impact. Pichai expressed his commitment to preventing a global “AI divide,” announcing the establishment of a $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund. This initiative aims to collaborate with local nonprofits and NGOs to expand access to AI education and training within communities worldwide.

Furthermore, Pichai advocated for “smart product regulation” that addresses potential harms while resisting protectionist tendencies from various nations. He cautioned that failing to do so could exacerbate the AI divide and stifle the benefits that AI can bring to society.
