Google's Portrait Light feature enhances ordinary photos by allowing users to adjust the direction and intensity of lighting. Launched for the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, this AI-driven technology is now available for older Pixel models as well.
In a recent blog post, Google explained the technology behind Portrait Light, detailing how it trained its machine learning models. To develop a model capable of adding lighting from various angles, Google collected millions of portraits, both with and without supplemental lighting. This was achieved using a spherical lighting rig equipped with 64 cameras and 331 programmable LED light sources, capturing diverse subjects across different skin tones, face shapes, genders, hairstyles, and outfits.
The model also identifies optimal illumination profiles for automatic light placement. For users of the Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), and Pixel 5, Portrait Light is automatically applied in default mode and to Night Sight photos featuring people. On older Pixel devices, the option to activate this feature can be found in the Adjust section during photo editing. For those who prefer manual adjustments, shooting in Portrait Mode and editing within Google Photos allows for repositioning and brightness adjustments of the lighting.
