At the Google I/O 2024 conference on Tuesday, the company announced that Gemini model capabilities are now accessible on the Google Maps Platform for developers, beginning with the Places API. This innovative feature allows developers to integrate generative AI summaries of locations directly into their applications and websites.
These summaries leverage insights from Google Maps' extensive community of over 300 million contributors, eliminating the need for developers to craft their own custom descriptions for various places.
For instance, a developer creating a restaurant-booking app can utilize this feature to provide users with tailored information about the best dining options. When users search for restaurants within the app, they will be presented with essential details such as house specialties, happy hour promotions, and the overall atmosphere of each venue.
The new AI-generated summaries cover a wide range of locations, including restaurants, shops, supermarkets, parks, and movie theaters. Additionally, Google is enhancing the Places API with AI-driven contextual search results. This feature allows developers to display pertinent reviews and photos connected to user searches within their applications.
For example, an app focused on exploring local dining options can enable users to search for “dog-friendly restaurants.” The app will then provide a list of suitable restaurants, complete with related reviews and photos featuring dogs at those establishments.
Currently, contextual search results are available worldwide, while place and area summaries are specifically accessible in the U.S., with plans for further expansion into additional countries in the future.
