Google Introduces Gemini to Enhance Its Education Suite

Google recently unveiled a range of innovative Gemini-related products at its Google I/O developer conference, particularly enhancing its Education suite with AI advancements. The centerpiece is the new Gemini add-on for educational institutions, integrated through Google Workspace.

The offering includes a foundational plan called Gemini Education, designed for educators and students over 18, available in English. This plan allows users to leverage Gemini’s capabilities in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet, enabling direct interaction with the AI.

For those seeking advanced features, there’s the Gemini Education Premium plan. Along with all the benefits of the base plan, Premium offers AI-driven note-taking, summarized content in Meet, and enhanced data loss prevention. Pricing for the base tier is set at $24 per month or $192 annually per user, while the premium option costs $36 monthly or $288 per year per user.

Notably, students over 18 at educational institutions can access Gemini completely free of charge, without needing one of the paid plans.

Google emphasizes that Gemini includes numerous education-centric functionalities. The AI can break down complex topics step-by-step, assist with material review, and pull information from reputable resources like Rice University’s OpenStax textbooks. Educators can utilize Gemini for creating lesson plan templates, tailoring content to meet diverse student needs, summarizing research, and personalizing feedback, among other applications.

During the conference, Google also introduced LearnLM, a suite of generative AI models specifically tailored for the education sector. LearnLM is integrated into various platforms, including YouTube, Google’s Gemini apps, Google Search, and Google Classroom. Additionally, AI-powered quizzing is being rolled out for academic videos on YouTube.
