IBM's Generative AI Delivers Tailored Player Insights for Wimbledon Fans

IBM has unveiled an innovative generative AI-powered feature for Wimbledon, designed to enhance the digital experience for tennis fans. Launched ahead of the championships set to begin on July 1, the new "Catch Me Up" feature provides personalized insights and analysis tailored to individual players, enriching the spectator experience like never before.

By leveraging sophisticated AI algorithms, the Catch Me Up feature analyzes recent player performances to predict winning probabilities, offering fans an insightful glimpse into what to expect on the court. This feature isn’t just limited to pre-match insights; it also supports post-match analysis, delivering highlights, detailed play-by-play breakdowns, match summaries, and essential statistics.

Chris Clements, the digital products lead for the All England Club, emphasized the commitment to enhancing the Wimbledon experience, stating, "We are dedicated to providing fans with the highest-quality experience, whether they are attending in person or engaging digitally. Generative AI empowers us to deliver a diverse range of personalized content to fans around the globe."

The development of the Catch Me Up feature utilizes IBM’s cutting-edge Granite language model, specifically trained to produce content in Wimbledon’s editorial style. The output of this model will be continuously monitored throughout the tournament to ensure accuracy and engagement.

Additionally, the Catch Me Up feature is designed to deliver personalized content amid simultaneous matches, catering to both men’s and women’s competitions. Complementing this is IBM’s Slamtracker, a revamped digital tool that summarizes match previews and reviews in an easy-to-read bullet-point format, making it simpler for fans to digest fixture and result information.

These generative AI advancements mark the next step in IBM's long-standing partnership with Wimbledon, which has previously introduced AI-generated commentary and video highlight packages for mobile applications. Jonathan Adashek, IBM’s senior vice president for marketing and communications, noted, "For 35 years, IBM and Wimbledon have collaborated to enhance fan engagement with all the action on the court."

The technology behind these generative AI features draws from IBM’s watsonX platform, which has also powered AI-driven experiences at prominent sporting events like the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, earlier this year. This commitment to merging technology with sports demonstrates IBM's dedication to enriching the fan experience and addressing diverse business needs across multiple sectors.
