Google has unveiled a new voice chat mode for its AI assistant, Gemini, called Gemini Live. Announced at the Pixel 9 event, this feature is available to Gemini Advanced subscribers and offers a conversational experience similar to ChatGPT's voice chat. With multiple voice options, users can engage in seamless dialogue, including interrupting responses and pausing conversations to return later. Gemini Live can operate in the background and even when the phone is locked.
This feature was first introduced during the I/O developer conference earlier this year, where Google also revealed its capability to interpret video in real time. In addition to Gemini Live, Google has introduced 10 new voice options, such as Ursa and Dipper. The feature has begun rolling out today in English for Android devices, with plans for an iOS release and support for additional languages in the coming weeks.
Furthermore, Google announced enhancements to its AI assistant, including new extensions for applications like Keep, Tasks, Utilities, and YouTube Music. Gemini will also have improved context-awareness, allowing users to ask about the content they are viewing, similar to AI features showcased by Apple at WWDC. By tapping "Ask about this screen" or "Ask about this video," users can receive relevant information, such as extracting travel destinations from videos for easy addition to Google Maps.
