Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday at Meta Connect 2024 that Meta AI has become one of the most widely used AI assistants globally, reporting nearly 500 million monthly active users. He emphasized that Meta AI is poised to become the leading assistant worldwide, highlighting its expansive growth. “We’re on the verge of reaching 500 million monthly users, and we haven’t even launched in several major markets yet,” he stated, referencing the lack of a launch in the EU.
Previously, Meta indicated over 400 million monthly users globally. During the Q2 2024 earnings call, CFO Susan Li shared that India is currently the largest market for Meta AI, attributed mainly to WhatsApp's significant user base of over 500 million in the country. In contrast, OpenAI’s ChatGPT enjoys more than 200 million weekly users.
At the event, Meta introduced a new suite of models named Llama 3.2, featuring advanced multimodal capabilities. Additionally, the company is rolling out Llama 3.2 lightweight models, specifically the 1B and 3B versions, which have not been trained on European user data, making their debut in Europe.
Furthermore, Meta unveiled new celebrity voices and lip-synced translations for Meta AI. The company expanded its generative AI-powered “Imagine” feature across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, enabling users to create images through prompts. Meta AI now also includes the ability to analyze and answer questions about your photos, as well as offering editing functionalities.
