Meta Unveils AI Assistant for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Users

Meta has launched Meta AI, an innovative chatbot that operates across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, providing users with instant responses to their queries within these popular social media platforms. Initially announced during the Connect event in September, Meta AI leverages natural language processing to assist users with a range of requests including restaurant recommendations, mathematical assistance, and composing professional emails.

Designed to streamline user interaction, Meta AI integrates seamlessly within Meta’s ecosystem, allowing users to remain within the app without needing to switch back and forth between different platforms. Notably, the assistant is also accessible while users scroll through their Feeds. This functionality enables real-time inquiries about posts, including requests for information about images viewed on Instagram.

With the addition of Emu, an advanced image generation model, Meta AI can create high-quality images on command, all free of charge. Users can even customize these generated images with specific text. Furthermore, the assistant has the capability to produce GIFs, though all AI-generated content will display an “imagined with AI” watermark to maintain transparency, adhering to the company’s updated content policies.

Currently, Meta AI is available in more than a dozen countries including South Africa, Australia, and Canada, although it currently operates exclusively in English. This latest iteration of the chatbot is powered by Meta’s new Llama 3 large language model, which significantly enhances its performance due to being trained on a dataset seven times larger than that of its predecessor, Llama 2. This training includes a substantial amount of synthetic data, illustrating the increasing importance of diverse datasets in developing effective AI models.

Meta AI also benefits from its access to real-time information provided by Microsoft Bing, enhancing its ability to deliver up-to-date answers.
