OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft are backing a California bill that mandates tech companies to label AI-generated content, as indicated by letters from these companies. The bill is slated for a final vote in August.
AB 3211 mandates the inclusion of watermarks in the metadata of AI-generated images, videos, and audio files. While many AI companies currently implement this feature, most users often overlook metadata. Additionally, AB 3211 requires major online platforms, such as Instagram and X, to clearly label AI-generated content in a way that is easily comprehensible for everyday viewers.
These tech giants are also members of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which played a significant role in developing the C2PA metadata standard, a prevalent guideline for identifying AI-generated material.
Previously, a trade association representing Adobe, Microsoft, and other leading software developers voiced opposition to AB 3211 in April, describing the bill as "unworkable" and "excessively burdensome" in a letter to California lawmakers. However, recent amendments to the proposal seem to have shifted their stance.
