According to Search Engine Land, when AI Overview was first launched in May, it appeared in approximately 80% of search results. Now, however, it appears in just 7% of searches. Google's introduction of the AI Overview feature in May allowed it to automatically summarize web content for users, enabling them to get answers without clicking through each result.
A recent incident highlighted the potential pitfalls of this feature when a user searching for solutions to "how to prevent cheese and pizza from sticking together" received a suggestion from Google AI to add “1/8 cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to make it stickier.” In response, Google acknowledged the need for improvements in its algorithms.
Since June, platforms like Reddit and Quora have seen a significant decrease in mentions by Google AI Overview, as the company recognized that user-generated content from these sites is often unreliable, at least for the purposes of AI summaries. Data indicates that the appearance rate of AI Overviews for educational queries dropped from 26% to 13%, while in e-commerce searches, it fell from 26% to 9%. Likewise, for entertainment-related inquiries, AI Overviews dropped close to 0% from 14%.
The research also revealed patterns in triggering AI Overviews; searches containing terms like “best,” “what is,” “how,” and “symptoms” were more likely to activate this feature, whereas those with “vs,” specific brand names, or general product names had a lower likelihood of doing so.
