Snapchat is set to enhance its offerings with exciting new generative AI features. Following the recent launch of its AI chatbot, My AI, which now responds with Snap messages as well as text, the company is introducing “Dreams.” This innovative feature will allow users to create AI-generated images, placing them and their friends in imaginative settings.
According to insights from app researcher Steve Moser, Snapchat is developing functionality that enables users to upload selfies, which the app will then transform into creative images based on their chosen scenarios. This resembles other popular AI photo applications already available on the App Store.
One app that gained significant attention last month is Remini, which allows TikTok users to upload selfies for professional-looking headshots, eliminating the need for costly photo shoots. However, Snapchat is aiming for something far more imaginative than standard headshots.
The aim of Dreams is to utilize AI-generated selfies to transport users into "fantastical places and scenarios." As indicated by Moser's research, to achieve optimal results, Snapchat users will need to provide clear selfies—free from obstructions and other individuals. Furthermore, experimenting with various angles, expressions, and lighting will enhance the quality of the AI-generated images.
Beyond individual creations, Snapchat is also developing a feature called “Dreams with Friends.” This will allow users to grant permission for their friends to create shared AI images, incorporating both individuals into these whimsical scenarios, as discovered by Moser.
Additionally, references to “Dream Packs” in Snapchat’s app suggest a potential monetization strategy for this feature in the future. First identified in the spring by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, the Dreams feature promises users the opportunity to embed their likeness into AI-generated realms and has been strategically placed within the app, between the Camera Roll and Stories.
These latest updates around Dreams with Friends and the introduction of Dream Packs indicate that Snapchat is moving ahead with these exciting generative AI features. While the company has yet to comment on the specific plans for Dreams, the launch is eagerly anticipated by users.
